Gov. Rendell: Alternative energy to aid recovery

The federal government can help the country escape from recession by launching a five-to-10 year infrastructure revitalization program and by taking steps to boost the production and consumption of alternative energy, Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell told a solar-energy conference Monday.

“I believe that over the next five years, the development of the green-energy economy can drive this nation’s comeback,” the Democratic governor said at the general session of PV America, which is being held at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia through Wednesday.

The conference is the first by the Solar Energy Industries Association to focus solely on photovoltaic solar energy, which comes from photovoltaic panels that convert sunlight into electricity.

What a day! On Thursday, we saw solar stock prices jump sharply higher in what can only be described as a stunning reversal of fortune. The two solar positions held in the ZachStocks Growth Model were up 12% and 45% respectively, and my actively traded Death Cross Trader service took home 189% gains in a solar related options play.

The move came out of the blue and caught many traders a bit unprepared. Investors sitting on the sidelines quickly realized their cash should be invested in this sector, and short sellers scrambled to cover positions while likely taking substantial losses.

But what actually caused this move? Why such a pronounced reaction? And will this mark the beginning of a new trend, or are we just seeing a “one-day-wonder?”

WASHINGTON– Today, the Solar Energy Industries Association released its 2008 U.S. Solar Industry Year in Review, highlighting a third year of record growth. The report notes that 1,265 megawatts (MW) of solar power of all types were installed in 2008, bringing total U.S. solar power capacity up 17 percent to 8,775 MW. The 2008 figure included 342 MW of solar photovoltaic (PV), 139 MWTh (thermal equivalent) of solar water heating, 762 MWTh of pool heating and an estimated 21 MW of solar space heating and cooling.
 
“Despite severe economic pressures in the United States, demand for solar energy grew tremendously in 2008,” said Rhone Resch, president and CEO of SEIA. “Increasingly, solar energy has proven to be an economic engine for this country, creating thousands of jobs, unleashing billions in investment dollars and building new factories from New Hampshire to Michigan to Oregon.”
